Artist Statement
Art is how I choose life. My practice is a process of inquiry — excavating trains of thought, planting ideas, tending what grows. I came to painting from careers in archaeology and horticulture, and that same instinct lives in the work: digging into what humans have left behind, planting toward a future of beauty and hope.
I work in oil paint on canvas and wood, colored pencil on linen, at times extending into making my own paint from naturally sourced pigments — a process that is itself a form of the search. My subjects are drawn from dreams, mythology, and the spiritual realm. I work under the name Ethereal Portals — these are the thresholds I'm interested in.
Grasping at truth that resists language, layering meaning onto ideas in ways that transcend what words alone can hold. Art is a spiritual practice that grants entry to the feeling of interconnectedness — a perfect hit of presence. Like a key to finding the right lock if the key and the lock are both needles in haystacks of their own. Some human experience I couldn't quite place, on the tip of my tongue becomes uplifted, a light shone on it and suddenly I have tools to investigate further.
I aim to make art that invites people on a journey of discovery. I'll supply the reference point; you accept the adventure. My hope is that the work leaves you luminous — carrying something of what it feels like to stand before a waterfall, to hold a shard of ancient pottery, to watch something you planted finally bloom. Mysterium Tremendum et Fascinans. The overwhelming, the terrifying, the irresistible.
